Application Tip of the Month

Criminal History

An individual may apply for a state job with a criminal conviction. This cannot be used to exclude eligible candidates without considering the job-relatedness and gravity of the offense, the nature of the job, and the time that has passed since the conviction. The Division of Personnel does not select, flag, or exclude eligible candidates based on conviction information.

There is a question on our application which asks, “Have you been convicted of a felony within the last 7 years?”  A “yes,” answer does not automatically bar you from State employment. However, a felony conviction may be considered as it relates to specific position requirements, such as jobs which involve working with individuals in the care of or custody of the State.
