Paid summer internships offer one hour of college credit for the first time ever
Governor Patrick Morrisey today announced that applications are now open for the West Virginia Governor’s Internship Program, an initiative that connects college students with meaningful summer employment across the state’s government agencies. Through 9- to 13-week paid internships, students will gain hands-on professional experience related to their academic interests under the supervision of industry experts and, for the first time ever, have the opportunity to earn one hour of college credit.
“The Governor’s Internship Program is a great opportunity for students to gain hands-on professional experience while learning more about our government agencies,” said Governor Patrick Morrisey. “We are proud to invest in the next generation of West Virginia leaders and help equip them with the skills needed to succeed.”
The West Virginia Governor’s Internship Program is available to West Virginia college students– whether they’re studying in or out of state. Participants are matched with state agencies according to their education, skills, and career interests. Students who complete the program will have the opportunity to earn one hour of college credit.
“A big thank you to Governor Morrisey for his commitment in investing in our students and workforce,” said West Virginia Department of Tourism Secretary Chelsea Ruby. “Initiatives like the Governor’s Internship Program position West Virginia as a national leader while we continue to win the Backyard Brawl.”
With workforce development being a top priority to the Morrisey administration, the Governor has revamped the Internship Program to create even more opportunities for participants, including one hour of college credit. Originally founded in 1989, the Governor’s Internship Program has connected more than 2,000 talented students with career-defining opportunities in government agencies, private businesses, and non-profit organizations. Throughout the internship, students will participate in professional development sessions designed to prepare them for future careers.
All applications must be submitted by June 15, 2026. Click here for more information on eligibility criteria and how to apply.
