Probationary Period

All new employees appointed from Division of Personnel registers for permanent positions are required to serve a probationary period. This is, in essence, a trial work period which allows supervisors and managers an opportunity to gauge the employee’s abilities. It also allows time for the employee to learn the workings of the office and the job, and adjust to the organization.

The probationary period for the majority of new employees will be six months in duration, with exception of few specific positions which have one-year periods. Any time an employee is off the payroll (for example, on a leave of absence without pay) will not count toward completion of the probationary period.

For complete details about the probationary period, please see the West Virginia Division of Personnel Administrative Rule.
